Meet Our Team!

Meet Our Dedicated Staff
Our staff is proud to "do this job for a loving, not a living."

Strengthening relationships with and among members is the heart of our YMCA!  This will help transform our YMCA from a transactional experience to a transformational experience! The number one focus is establishing, building and supporting relationships with our members, particularly the new members. These new members are health seekers! These are the people who need us most and with whom we can have the most impact!  Our staff is proud to be a part of such an amazing organization and is looking forward to helping our members in any way we can!

Steven Lynch, Healthy Living Director

My name is Steven and I was born and raised in Lakin, KS, where I participated in football, cross country, basketball, and track but basketball was my favorite sport. Even now basketball is my favorite. I am a competitive person and will compete in just about any sport.  After high school I went to community college where I eventually transferred to Fort Hays State University where I earned my bachelors’ degree in Sport and Recreation Management.  I did my internship here at the YMCA January, February, and March of 2013 and have been here since.  After my internship I was actually the interim director for a month until someone was hired full time for the job.  After that, I worked as the building supervisor for about a month or so until I was offered the Child Care Coordinator job. I worked that for about a year and a half until the Healthy Living Director job opened up again.  So I applied for the job and was offered it shortly after.  I am lucky and blessed to be able to come here after school and also to be able to stay here, I really enjoy working for the YMCA.  I have now been married for six years on August 14, 2016.  As of now I have a three year old daughter named Bella and we are expecting a second in December 2016.

CJ Perkins, Property Manager

My name is CJ Perkins born and raised here in garden city ks, I have played sports all my life such as football, basketball, baseball. I would say i am an all around sports guy and athletic. I have been working for the YMCA for over four years now. Before this I could not find a steady job that I really liked and when i had my daughter Eva i knew I had to do something quick to take care of her. Thats when I found out that the YMCA was hiring and thats where it all started. My mentor Joe Garcia the building manager at the time gave me a chance to prove myself that I was the right person for the job starting out as building supervisor and i loved it. Meeting new people and helping a Christan organization was what I was looking for. Over the years Joe has taught me everything I know to take care of the YMCA. I moved up from building supervisor to maintenance coordinator after about 2 years and from there i was Joe's right hand man we could get anything accomplished! After another 2 years Joe told me that it was my time to shine and take care of the Y on my own as the building manager as he had to retire. If it wasn't for my mentor I wouldn't be here so i look up to and thank him for everything that he has done for me. I love working here, the YMCA is a great place and the environment is amazing. The YMCA has taking me a long way in life and I am thankful for being apart of a great organization!

Keali Carr, Aquatics Director

Hello, my name is Keali (sounds like Keely) and I have been in the aquatic industry my entire life. I started swimming as a kindergartener because, at the time, it was a requirement in Holcomb's school district. I am a Holcomb native; born, raised, and a graduate from Holcomb, KS. I started my aquatic adventure as a lifeguard when I was 16 years old at the Holcomb Rec. I became a water safety instructor at 17 and became the assistant manager at the age of 18 all at the Holcomb Rec. At 19, I made my way to the YMCA and have loved it ever since! I was a lifeguard and a swim instructor for a couple of months. I then moved to the Welcome Center and became part of the MSA staff along with being a lifeguard and swim instructor. I furthered my water knowledge and became and Water in Motion instructor in February of 2013. In May of 2013, I was promoted to the Membership Coordinator and still kept my lifeguarding, swim instructor, and WIM instructor going. In March of 2014, I was promoted again to the Aquatics Director. I love my job and everything that comes with it because I have done this my entire life. I hope to stay with the YMCA for a long time!

Alicia Johnston, Development Director

Hello there!  My name is Alicia Johnston and I have just been recruited into the wonderful family of the Southwest Kansas YMCA! I am the new Development Director!  I have been a member of the Y for about 5 years now and have gotten to know the staff pretty well. My husband, Jordan, and I moved here from Wichita in 2007.  We have four beautiful children, Kaeden (13), Millicent (11), Koehn (8), and Elias (8).  Yes, twin boys, that are VERY active! You will probably see them running around here at some point!

I have really grown to love the area and the people in southwest Kansas.  I try to be an active parent in my childrens’ schools and lives.  I am the vice president of the P.T.O. and my hubby and I are active coaches in our childrens sports.   I have worked hand-in-hand with a lot of teachers, parents, and children.  I love helping people, and making our world a better place for our children.  I think I will be a good addition to the YMCA because I can’t wait to start another day and try to make a difference in peoples lives.  (Even if it is just a smileJ)  So come on in and you can stop by my office if you are in need of a smile.  I will be happy to give you one!

Chad Knight, CEO

Being a YMCA rat at a young age and growing up in Garden City, I was blessed to learn many lifelong skills at the Y. I was fortunate that my mom and dad provided me the opportunities to learn and play racquetball, basketball, swim and learn many other values at the YMCA. I graduated from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk Jayhawk) with a Bachelor of Science in Education. My major was Recreation Management. Growing up in the YMCA, it was always my dream to come back and work at the Y. I would always tell the Sports Director, Greg Reinert that I was going to come back and have his job! I was the Sports Director twice before I came back in 2000. to become the Executive Director. Being the CEO, it gives me great honor to lead our YMCA and provide those lifelong skills to others. I believe in the YMCA Mission and I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would rather work! You could say I am living the dream! I can assure you that we will continue our mission, stress the importance of healthy lifestyles, listen to your needs and wants and make sure our Character Counts in all of our programs!

Family: My family includes my wife Roni, daughter Caleigh and son Camden.

Hobbies: I enjoy playing racquetball, basketball and swimming at the Y. I love to officiate all sports, particularly basketball and football. My biggest thrill is coaching my kids, especially baseball/softball, and other kids in all their YMCA activities or other programs.

Karen Berry, Chief Financial Officer

There are many things I like about working for the Y; people being proactive regarding health, believing in family values and mostly a Christian environment. The Y has given me many opportunities for travel, education and experiences that have enriched my life. Each day at the Y brings new challenges and opportunities for learning. Our volunteers teach me something new at every committee meeting. My co-workers encourage me.

In the morning I make an inspirational commute from Scott City where I reside with the love of my life, my husband, Denton. We are blessed with two beautiful daughters, two wonderful sons-in- law, and three remarkable grandchildren. I love every day of being a parent more than the day before and being a grandmother has enlightened me on the meaning of God's unconditional love. My faith, friends, family and church bring me joy. My favorite things to do are learning, beholding nature, laughing, watching movies and reading or listening to books.
