Everyone should know how to swim!
YMCA swim lessons are designed to help each participant learn how to swim better and be safe in the water. The Garden City Family YMCA offers progressive classes for ages 6 months through adult. Learn the basics, then build your skills and develop your technique. Private, partner and group lessons are available. The Y, through generous funding from the Finnup Foundation also offers FREE Y Splash basic water safety classes. These are not lessons but will teach youth and adults basic safety around water skills.
Why learn to swim?
Swimming develops all muscle groups evenly
Each year, over 8,000 people learn to swim at the Y
Drowning is the leading cause of death in children age 1 - 5 yrs
It may take 30-80 swim lessons to learn to swim independently
Skills will dwindle if swimmers practice only in the summer!

Youth Water Safety
Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

Level 3 Water Stamina: T/Th 6:45-7:30pm
Level 4 Stroke Introduction: T/TH 6:45-7:30pm
Level 5 Stroke Development: T/TH 6:00-6:45pm
Level 6 Stroke Mechanics T/TH 6:00-6:45pm
Preschool Water Safety
Students will learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency. They will be learning two benchmark skills: "swim, float, swim," and "jump, push, turn, grab."
Levels and Times
Level 1 Water Acclimation: M/W 5:30-6pm
Level 2 Water Movement: M/W 6-6:30pm
Parent-Tot Water Safety
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
